NOW IN THE BOXES

IN THE KITCHEN...

Your MEPC Board just had its first meeting of the 2025 year, and do we have an exciting year shaping up!  We are planning tournaments April 26, May 10, May 17 and May 24.  June 14th is flag day.  What do you do on flag day?  You plan a pickleball tournament, of course.  July 5th we will pickle patriotically.  August 2 we tourney in the heat.  Sept 13 is the Lighthouse festival in Mukilteo and believe you me we will be up the road at Olympic View Middle School slugging it out with baseline drives and kitchen line dinks for fairly lame medals.

Skills and Drills at Forest Park will pick back up April 3 and continue every first Thursday of the month with Allison Mead and Pickleball Rick Bomar laying down the knowledge.  Potluck in the Park will be back July 23 with BBQing and Pickling up at Forest Park.  We will switch Monday's BYON (Bring your own Net) at Evergreen Middle School to Manic Mondays at Olympic Middle School where we have a box full of nets and balls.

We are also in talks with several Professionals to lead Clinics like Susannah Barr and Lucy Kovalova.  Women's Day Play at Volli has already kicked off, thanks to Nancy Smith.  Do you think I forgot Matt Arnold's Paddle Battles?  Well they will be kicking off in May and crushing their way through most Saturdays in the summer.

The weather is still crummy but rest assured, when the sun shines MEPC will deliver pickleball mania!

Get ready MEPC ladies!  Starting the first Monday in January there will be an afternoon of play at Volli available to ladies only.  This event will occur the first Monday of the month through April.  Please sign up on the WhatsApp pole.  All levels welcome!  Only 16 spots available, so if you sign up, please follow through with attending.  Cost is $15 at the door and Nancy Smith will be your host.

Thanks to all for making our Holiday Party a great time, and especially Grape and Grain for hosting us.  Pictures are in the photo gallery.  Pickleball 101 with Allison Mead will probably not take place till the spring.  A reminder when playing outside and the nets get wet, please dry them out before returning them to their lock box.  This ensures longer lasting nets and happier pickleball players.  We are bringing in some new Selkirk balls that can handle being smashed in the cold a little better than the Franklin balls.  Also in the boxes will be some Franklin winter playballs.  So picky ballers beware.....

Don't know quite how those nets get back into the bags?  Follow Pickleball Rick's easy step by step directions to a successful rebagging of nets

Check out our new Logo Wear page.  We have partnered up with Lasting Impressions for all of our swag including shirts, hoodies, and bottles.

Are you new to the sport of pickleball?  Want to learn what is so great about the game?  MEPC offers a free clinic to beginners.  Text Allison Mead at 425 359 9552 to let her know you are interested in being in a Pickleball 101 clinic.  When there is enough interest, she will offer a beginner clinic.

The Paddle Battles and Volli sign ups use Scoreholio for scoring.  Download and familiarize yourself with the Scoreholio app.  Create a free account and look for tournaments in your area.  From that list you will see MEPC's latest offerings.  Most of the time, there are multiple levels and a waitlist.  Sign up appropriately and don't forget to have your partner signup as well!

The Halloween themed tournament "PICKLEJUICE FOOD DRIVE" was a huge success!!  Many, many thanks to the participants that made it so successful.  And as David Baron said, "Way to go on the donations."  Lots and lots of perishables and monetary donations to include a quite large anonymous donation that created a little gasp.  We'll announce the final total after Rick Seely has had a chance to add it up.

We have a new Board Member!!!  Parker Burns is now on your MEPC Board.  Parker was born to lead.  He was molded into existence from many past generations of lackluster pickleball players.  He is an efficient problem solver and can be seen most Wednesdays in the Park slouched over in his chair drifting in and out of sleep.  Give him a nudge, and tell him to do something!  He's on the Board now!

FOREST PARK CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE UPDATE

Project will result in seven dedicated Pickleball courts, and three striped shared use courts.  The seven dedicated courts will be in the area of the existing tennis court and the horseshoe pits.

Timeline (updated Nov 2024)

  • Start of construction has been tentatively delayed until August 2025.

  • The City expects to complete a contract with the state by the end of 2024 for the $345,000 in funding from the state legislature that MEPC worked with the City to get.

  • The City has applied for 2 grants to help with project costs.   The reason construction is delayed until August 2025 is that these grants do not allow any reimbursements for costs spent before a grant contract is executed. These grant contracts are not distributed until July 2025.

  • City Parks staff said the current budget cuts will not affect construction of the courts.  The City has allocated funding to this project in case a grant does not come through, but they think that it is the best use of City resources to hold out to see if they get a grant.

  • Kimberly Moore, Asst. Parks Director said, “Thanks to your group for your ongoing input and patience.”
